Finding Programs Easily

Welcome once again to your latest tip of the month!

This month’s topic is on your computer’s search capabilities. How many times I’ve seen a desktop cluttered with program shortcuts, I don’t know. What I DO know, however, is that there is a new feature built into both Windows and Macs that allows you to easily and quickly find whatever program you need to find….and how!

Windows:

Starting with Windows Vista (*gag* sorry, reflex), Microsoft did actually get one thing right: the Start Menu search bar. If you go to said Start Menu, I’m sure by now everyone has noticed the white bar along the bottom?

Here’s something fun: you don’t even need to click in the box! Just starting typing for whatever program you want, and presto! It will find it at the top of your Start menu, ready to go with a click (or even an Enter keystroke if it’s the first option).

Macs:

Starting with OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Apple included a new feature called Spotlight. This feature is accessible by clicking on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the screen. And oh, by the way, it functions the same way as Windows Search. Simply type in the program or document you are looking for, and it will find it before you’re even done typing!

Well that’s it for this month’s tip of the month! Stay tuned for next time!
